Machine Shop Styled Shoot

Something I have been waiting for for a long time (like 6 years) is finally happening… this old machine shop that sat abandoned for years is turning in to my dream venue, called (appropriately enough) the Machine Shop. I love everything about the space. The raw elements, exposed metal and brick, the windows (THE WINDOWS!) and all the cool machinery pieces that will stay as a small piece of Minneapolis history.

I was fortunate enough to do the first official styled shoot there and we actually did two in one day! Not sure how we did it (coffee, naivete) but I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. This is the first one I am going to share with you, it is simple and clean and lovely. Jessica from the Machine Shop has actually coined a term for it #industrialluxe

Of course, it takes a (vendor) village so I have to give major thanks to Cadence and Eli for the stunning images, Apres Party & Tent Rentals and Beverly & Co. for the rentals, and last but not least BLOMMONSTER for the floral. Amanda, my friend, thank you for your stellar modeling, glad you were able to wear your wedding dress one more time!

Sarah & Finn | Camptastic!

I had such a great time with Sarah and Finn planning this “up north” destination wedding at Clearwater Forest Camp. Destination wedding planning always has its special challenges and with Minnesota weather being unpredictable it was a gamble deciding to dinner al fresco – but the gamble paid off and guests had a wonderful dinner by Chowgirls out on the lawn. It was a fun, relaxing weekend for all involved that included games, bonfires, beer, dancing and my new favorite dessert – PAVLOVA. To sum it up in one word, it was camptastic! Thank you to Amanda Summerlin for these stunning images. Planning, design, floral and stationery by Rocket Science Weddings & Events, Rentals by Apres Party & Tent and Beverly & C0., DJ – Roosevelt Mansfield aka DJ Digie.

Monkey Business

You really can’t get a party more up our alley – monkeys (albeit of the stuffed variety), stilt walking flower girls, a champagne chandelier and 12 piece brass band… this awesome couple knew how to have fun and we were so thrilled to work with them on designing and planning their wedding. We used a painting done by the bride to inspire the color palette and decor, and then worked the painting in to the stationery suite and other elements like the ice bar. The Minneapolis Club was the perfect setting and the images by Becca Dilley captured the beauty and fun of the day.

Alyson & Jesse | Making It Legal

So, I don’t have a lot to say about this wedding because I am at a loss for words. This wedding was one of the most special I have ever had the opportunity to be apart of. When my dear friend Alyson asked me if I would officiate her legal ceremony with her wife Jesse I of course said yes. It was a true honor and privilege to marry these two at their property up north, Juliane James Place. I didn’t even mind having to dress “Game of Thrones” as the fur collar kept me warm on this cold November day. Congratulations Mrs. & Mrs. Newquist!!

(Alyson owns Bash Collective, so I cannot take any credit for the decor or planning, I just showed up to officiate and celebrate. The beautiful flowers were done by Munster Rose and the photography by Photogen-inc.)

Bridal Party Gift Ideas

Brides often ask me what make good presents for their bridesmaids. They want to do something fun, unique and meaningful to express their gratitude for their friends and family being apart of the wedding. I like bridesmaid gifts that they can use on the wedding day, but also will get enjoyment out of after the wedding. The gift will serve as a reminder of how much fun the wedding was and bring back good memories. I also like gifts that are customized to each bridesmaid. That extra personal touch makes the gift that much more special. Personalizing can be hard, but I have some fantastic options I am going to share with you right now!

This is a very common bridesmaid gift, so they can wear it with their dress the day of the wedding. Often this jewelry isn’t something you would want to wear again. But Kendra Scott jewelry is!

I know of Kendra Scott Jewelry because I have rented her stuff off Rent The Runway. Just recently at Engage!13 (a conference I attended) I learned about her new service, the Color Bar. You can take many of her amazing designs and customize the stones in the pieces. It is SO fun to play around online. I can totally see each bridesmaid getting a slightly different style piece of jewelry but all in the same color scheme to match the dresses. Or maybe each girl gets the same style but in her favorite color. There are a million stone options and you can also customize the metal (gold or silver). The jewelry is high quality but not outrageously priced. I get a ton of compliments every time I wear my pieces I designed on the Color Bar.

A local designer I just love is Larissa Loden. I love her “vintage meets modern” designs, specifically her custom map necklaces. How great to give each of your bridesmaids a necklace (or even better a locket!) with a map of her hometown. She also does custom cuff links so your groomsmen are taken care of too!

I had the fortunate experience of being able to meet Charlotte, the owner of Plum Pretty Sugar at Engage!13 as well. What a talented and nice woman. Plum Pretty Sugar makes the most adorable robes and sleepwear. You have probably seen Plum Pretty Sugar robes on wedding blogs or in magazines, they are a great gift for your bridesmaids for getting ready. By having a robe that ties in front instead of something that pulls over your head, you won’t risk ruining your bridesmaids beautiful hair and makeup. Get all matching robes or pick the style that fits each girl best, they all coordinate. (I think the photos look better when the robes don’t match.) Plum Pretty Sugar also makes jewelry blooms, great for storing and transporting your jewelry. How cute would it be to give each bridesmaid a robe and matching jewelry bloom (with her jewelry she needs for the wedding inside of course!) first thing in the morning.

What girl wouldn’t love a cashmere sweater?! I can’t take credit for this idea, this was a former bride of mine who came up with this and I love it. She got her bridesmaids J Crew cashmere sweaters in their favorite color with their initials on it. These days J Crew lets you monogram just about anything, so if sweaters aren’t your thing you can choose pajamas, belts, socks, or even swimsuits (warm weather destination wedding?!).

One of my favorite accessories you can use on a wedding day (besides jewelry) is a great handbag. And we are lucky to have a local designer that makes killer bags in a variety of styles. Jenna Lou Designs makes custom clutches and bags perfect for your bridesmaids. You can select from a wide variety of fabrics and if you don’t see something you like, you can make your own on Oh, did I mention you can monogram the bags? She also makes great guys’ gifts like custom ties.

No matter what time of year, a wrap of some sort always comes in handy for your ladies. Beautiful pashminas or fur stoles/wraps are lovely gifts they can use again and again.

Shoes always make a great gift. Comfy TOMS or flip flops that coordinate with the wedding attire, or you can get real fancy and design your own sneakers at Nike or Converse. If you want to splurge, I recommend the best ballet flat on the planet, Tieks. My staff wears them to work events because they are stylish and outrageously comfortable. They come in a wide variety of colors and the packaging is downright adorable.
